Busyness in your Business
Hi, I'm Amber. Welcome to my TED talk about "busyness" in your business.
At the beginning of starting my business, I noticed a trend of the people I looked up to professionally... they all lived very 'busy' lifestyles. Always on calls, overflowing inbox, client work out the ears, traveling for work, and always moving 1000mph.
Dangerously, my subconscious told me that in order to be important or successful, I have to be busy.
I never rested.
My calendar was overflowing.
Inbox out of control.
I had confused my business's productivity and success...with busyness.
In 2018, you can probably guess how that turned out for me... I'll give you a hint... it starts with BURN... and ends with... OUT... and rhymes with schanic schattacks.
I had turned my business into busyness.
I ran myself to the ground. I was constantly overworking myself beyond my capacity, dropping balls, and multitasking at any opportunity (yes, even time with my husband). I had my first of many panic attacks... I was busy and beyond burnt out.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started setting boundaries.
I started to be careful with my time and energy.
I started shifting who I was looking up to.
I started reminding myself of what success is to me.
“Being busy is not a badge of honor, it’s a lack of self-boundaries.”
I thought I had to be busy to be important... but I’m realizing that the concept of “busyness” it is celebrated as a badge of honor/success in the #femaleentrepreneurship products.
Why don’t you see men’s products covered in these sayings...? Ugh.
Why do you think we as a culture celebrate being busy and view it as success?
How can we slow down and stop celebrating “busyness” in our own lives?
For whoever needs to hear this today, "You do not have to be busy to be important."
